CHAPTER THIRTY

SEND IN THE CLOWNS

Jack was on his way back to the Woodshed when he saw the red light. He’d gone on a walk to sort out the madness of the day. The Hourglass always flashed a red beam on the field when it was time for him to report for duty.

It had been like watching time in reverse. He saw his life flash before his eyes. He had been that cat. He had been in that chair. They had assured him that working for them was the answer to all of his problems. An easy out. As the Widow and the Hourglass spoke to Grey, Jack remembered the saying, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” He couldn’t even look at Grey as she walked past him on her way out of the Woodshed.

“What have you heard?” the Hourglass demanded as he walked into the Woodshed.

“Not much to report yet,” Jack shared. “I snooped around the Jam Barn, but Grey wasn’t there. I got as close as I could without being seen. I heard someone mention something about a deer, but who knows?”

They knew who. Or “hoo”, rather, if their hunch was correct. Things just got interesting.

“We know where they’re going,” the Hourglass replied. “And we know their plan. Send in the clowns.”

Jack cringed. He hated when the Hourglass called the other animal workers clowns. Sometimes it called them puppets. It just depended on the day. He didn’t want to think of himself as a clown . . . but right now, he sure felt that way.

“Miss Jay is taking Grey to see her friend, Biggie,” the Hourglass continued. “Biggie will guide them up the mountain. We’ll send a few Team Widow success stories to meet them along the way. It might help Grey see just how much we can do for her.”

“Sure thing, boss,” Jack mumbled on his way out the door. Success stories. Right.
